Under Armour founder and CEO Kevin Plank will deliver the spring commencement address at the University of Maryland, College Park, the school announced Monday.
Plank, who began his vision for the apparel company while a student at UM, will address thousands of students and their families and friends on May 18 at the XFINITY Center.
Mary Ann Rankin, UM's senior vice president and provost, said in a statement the university was "incredibly pleased" to have Plank as speaker.
"Plank embodies the entrepreneurial spirit that we strive to instill in all UMD students, and will offer a great deal of inspiration to our graduates," she said.
Plank was a special teams captain for the UM football program in 1995 and was inspired to create a moisture-wicking shirt after becoming drenched in sweat from the summer heat every day. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1996 and went on to found the company that now has revenues of nearly $4 billion annually.
