High school seniors across Maryland are among the 16,000 National Merit semifinalists announced Wednesday.
The students were chosen based on their test scores on the PSAT which they took as juniors in high school. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, about 16,000, represents less than 1% of high school seniors nationwide.
The number of semifinalists in each state is chosen based on the state’s percentage of the total number of graduating seniors nationally.
About 15,000 of the semifinalists will go on to become finalists and about half will be awarded a National Merit Scholarship next spring. The scholarship awards total about $30 million.
The list of finalists will be released in February, and the scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and ending in July.
