The Baltimore city school system voted Tuesday to approve a neighborhood school's conversion to a charter school.
In 2016, Brehms Lane Elementary School will begin operating as a charter school by Afya Baltimore Inc., which runs two other schools in the city. It was the only program, out of five applications to expand or open charters in the next two years, to get approval from the board.
The board voted 6 to 1 to approve Afya's application to run Brehms Lane. City school board chair Shanaysha Sauls, who will step down at the end of the month to operate a charter school, abstained from all votes.
Five new charter schools are scheduled to open in Baltimore City in fall 2015.
