St. Mary's College of Maryland is among 106 institutions nationwide that are being reviewed by the federal Office for Civil Rights for possible sexual discrimination infractions.
St. Mary's was named on a list in February by the OCR, a division of the U.S. Department of Education. The list was initially released last May with 55 schools but has grown steadily since.
Four cases cited by the OCR at St. Mary's are the most for any single school. The document said St. Mary's has three cases dated Feb. 6 and one dated March 10.
No details were given, but OCR says the school on the list are being investigated for possible violations of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex discrimination in all educational programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance.
Other Maryland schools currently on the list: Frostburg for a 2013 case, and Johns Hopkins and Morgan State for cases in 2014.
Department of Education officials said in a statement it would not disclose specific information about schools under investigation but said that the list includes "investigations opened because of complaints received by OCR and those initiated by OCR as compliance reviews."
Said St. Mary's spokeswoman Cheryl Bates-Lee, "We have been notified by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights (OCR) of recent complaints filed against the college. We take the safety of our campus community very seriously and are working closely with OCR to respond promptly to its requests."
According to documents released by OCR officials, as of Wednesday there were a total of 113 cases under investigation across the country.
