Naval Academy professor sues Kent Island woman for sending academy her social media posts

A Naval Academy adjunct professor is suing a Queen Anne’s County woman for defamation, claiming that woman conspired to have her fired.

Gordana Schifanelli is a lawyer living in Queen Anne’s County and has been an adjunct professor of law and economics and personal finance at the Naval Academy for four years. She filed a suit for $750,000 in Queen Anne’s County Court on Sunday against Mary Ella Jourdak, claiming Jourdak sent doctored screenshots of Schifanelli’s social media posts to the academy in an effort to have her fired.

Jourdak tagged the Navy and the academy in tweets with screenshots of Schifanelli’s posts in the Facebook group Kent Island Patriots.

Jourdak‘s attorney could not be reached for comment.

Schifanelli’s posts criticize Queen Anne’s County Schools Superintendent Dr. Andrea Kane, saying Kane used her position to promote Black Lives Matter as a political organization she calls “Marxist” and “militant.”

Schifanelli created the Kent Island Patriots group, which has more than 2,000 members, in response to Kane’s email sent to Queen Anne’s families on June 5.

In the email, Kane wrote that “racism is alive in our country, our state, in Queen Anne’s County, and our schools,” and cited a University of California Los Angeles sociology professor, Tyrone Howard, who urged Americans to “stop challenging Black Lives Matter, as it only exacerbates the marginalization.”

Gordana Schifanelli, an attorney and mother of three who lives in Stevensville, started a Facebook group, Kent Island Patriots, in opposition to Dr. Andrea Kane, superintendent of the Queen Anne’s County Public Schools, over her open support of Black Lives Matter. The group garnered more than 2,000 members in a month, and some members are calling for Kane’s ouster.

Schifanelli and her lawyer, Marc Schifanelli, declined to comment on the lawsuit. Jourdak also declined to comment.

Naval Academy representatives confirmed Schifanelli is still an adjunct professor at the academy but did not comment further.
