NFL commissioner says Vick won't be disciplined for Va. Beach shooting

Of The Morning Call

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made a definitive ruling Tuesday evening on Michael Vick, deciding not to discipline the Eagles' quarterback for holding a public birthday bash at a Virginia Beach nightclub in which a former business associate and fellow defendant in a 2007 dogfighting conviction was wounded by a gunshot.

"Commissioner Goodell informed Michael Vick today at Eagles camp that there will be no disciplinary action as a result of the incident in Virginia, based on his current understanding of the facts," a statement by the league said. "Commissioner Goodell spoke several weeks ago by phone with Michael, Tony Dungy, and Eagles Coach Andy Reid. All were in agreement on the need for additional support measures to be added to Michael's plan to enhance his opportunity to succeed in life and football. These additional steps will remain confidential, but they will require Michael to meet even higher standards."

The announcement came just a few hours after Goodell in a press conference at Eagles training camp seemed to contradict a statement from the league office one week earlier by saying he hadn't made a final decision on Vick.

"I haven't announced any decision yet," Goodell said earlier on Tuesday. "Let me sit with Michael first and then I'll be able to make you all aware of what I'm going to do."

Goodell finally was able to sit down with Vick over dinner on Tuesday evening. Vick, who declined interview requests Tuesday, is scheduled to speak to the media after Wednesday morning's practice.

The original statement by the NFL, issued on the opening day of Eagles' camp, said there has been "no change in his playing status," which had been widely interpreted as Vick being cleared.

Apparently the statement only indicated that no final decision had been made.
