Thursday's local college variety roundup: U.Va. ranked 25th in preseason baseball poll

Virginia's baseball team was ranked 25th in the USA Today preseason coaches poll, which Arkansas leads.

The Cavaliers finished 39-19-1 last season and played host to an NCAA regional, earning the program’s ninth straight NCAA tournament bid.

North Carolina is fourth, N.C. State 11th and Georgia Tech 21st. Clemson, UNC Wilmington and Virginia Tech received votes but didn’t make the top 25.

Women’s lacrosse:

Old Dominion senior Shelby Davis was selected to the preseason All-CAA team.

Defending conference champion Towson was picked to repeat and James Madison was picked second. William and Mary was picked sixth and ODU seventh out of eight schools, and JMU senior Casey Ancarrow was selected as Preseason Player of the Year.

Indoor track and field:

Hampton sophomore Sulaiman Fareed and junior Breana Norman earned MEAC Athlete of the Week honors.

Fareed won the men’s shot put at the CNU Invitational on Sunday with a throw of 51 feet, 7 1/4 inches. Norman won the women’s high jump at 5-8 3/4.


Buford Meredith, the longest-tenured employee in the Virginia Tech athletics department, died Wednesday night at age 78.

Meredith, a grounds foreman, started working at Tech in 1962 and in athletics in April 1966.

Men’s golf:

Christopher Newport, coming off two NCAA tournament berths, was picked to finish fourth among nine teams in the USA South, traditionally one of the nation’s better Division III conferences.

Methodist was named the favorite.
