I liked George H.W. Bush. So much so that I worked on his presidential campaign in 1980. One of a very few California Republicans who did.
Bush was the last World War Two veteran to become President. He was the last of the gentlemen presidents for what may be a long time. He was also the last moderate republican we may see in our lifetimes.
As an editorial cartoonist I supported him in his run for the presidency in 1988. I was deeply disappointed in him when he reneged on his oath to fight against any new taxes. (As I cartooned at the time, "While we were reading his lips we failed to look at his nose...")
In the end George Herbert Walker Bush led one of the great lives of the 20th century. His unbending patriotism was inspiring. His compassion and obvious humanity made for a good example of what is truly exceptional about America.
