The Garza family didn't come to play when it came to corn-eating Saturday afternoon.
Logan Garza and Skyler Tinoco, of Crown Point, the two standouts in the 12-under division of the Corn-Eating Contest at the Crown Point Corn Roast in Bulldog Park Saturday afternoon, were neck-and-neck the whole duration. And just when one of them would throw his ear of corn up in victory, the judges would find a few extra kernels and send them back to eating.
Finally, Skyler ultimately reigned victorious.
In the 13-over category, meanwhile, Logan's parents, Sean and Cheryl Garza, were also cob-and-cob, resulting in a tie. Cheryl Garza, however, had other ideas.
"I win, because I'm better than him," she joked, ultimately winning in her division.
Easily more than 3,000 people have checked out the roast's new location, Crossroads Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sue Reed said Saturday as she and several volunteers set up for the beer garden. The majority of attendees love the new set-up, but at least on Friday, there were those who were still disappointed that the corn roast was moved off the Square, where it's been since the start.
But even they were pleasantly surprised, she said. The amenities stood out the most.
"It was warm out yesterday, so we turned on the splash pad for the kids for a few hours, and everyone loved it. That's something we've never had before," roast co-chair Erika Dahl said. "Plus with all the flower planters, there's much more seating for people where before, we used to have rent tables and chairs. People aren't on top of each other anymore."
The men who started at all, the Crown Point Shrine Club, were getting used to their new spot. Club president Jack Hartlerod said people were asking on social media where the new booth was. By Saturday afternoon, though, the customers were steady.
"As long as we're selling corn, we don't care where were are," past president Butch McNorton said.
