Harford schools to distribute extra meal Thursday before employees are off for spring break

Harford County Public Schools’ spring break was supposed to be this coming Friday and Monday, April 10 and 13. Because of this scheduled closure, an additional meal bag will be available for each child at every meal site on Thursday. Meals will not be distributed at the sites Friday and Monday.

The additional meal bag will include items for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meals are not shelf-stable, according to the school system, and need to be refrigerated.

The school system has adjusted some times and locations for meal sites since food and nutrition staff began distributing free meals to families March 16, including a few changes going into affect this week.

Meals are now being served at Aberdeen High School instead of Aberdeen Middle School. Bel Air High School began serving meals on Monday and North Harford High begins meal distribution on Tuesday. Times have been changed or extended at a few other locations.

Children age 18 and younger and any HCPS student, regardless of age, can receive a meal bag during pickup. Children do not have to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals or be enrolled in school distribution location.

An adult must provide the number of children to be served and the children’s full names at pickup. Children do not have to be present for parents to pick up meals.

Superintendent Sean Bulson, in a message to parents Friday, said demand for meals continues to increase daily. Food and nutrition staff served over 10,000 meals to 3,500 students on Friday, he wrote.
