Monday’s new caseload is the lowest daily total reported since Dec. 27, when 1,758 cases were tallied — a sign that the state may be starting to recover from the record numbers of new cases and hospitalizations in Maryland reported around the holidays.

There were 1,850 Maryland residents hospitalized Monday, down from the peak of 1,952 last Tuesday. Of those, 421 were being treated in intensive care units, 13 more than Sunday.

Meanwhile, Maryland’s seven-day average testing positivity rate as of Monday was 8.22%, virtually unchanged from Sunday’s 8.12% rate. The state administered not quite 26,000 coronavirus tests on Sunday, or about half the number of the 50,000 tests administered daily during the past few days.
