Jan. 14: Anne Arundel adds 341 coronavirus cases, three new deaths

Anne Arundel County reported 341 new coronavirus cases and three new deaths Thursday. Maryland reported 2,948 new cases and 44 new deaths.

The county case rate remains high at 62.6 cases per 100,000 people. The case rate is a metric of infections per 100,000 people, averaged over seven days, to judge how quickly and widely the virus is spreading in the county. At 62.6 infections reported Thursday, Anne Arundel County now has the second-highest case rate among the eight most populous Maryland jurisdictions, as Frederick County’s shot up significantly this week after a precipitous decrease.

While the testing volume has some impact on the case rate, the county generally tests a steady percentage of the population in a given week.

The total number of confirmed infections since March is now 29,016, and at least 396 Anne Arundel County residents have died. Fourteen others are suspected of having died of the virus but were never tested.

Across the state, at least 317,815 infections have been recorded since March, and at least 6,277 Marylanders have died of the virus.

More than 10.6% of tests for the virus in Anne Arundel County came back positive. The statewide positivity rate reported Thursday is 8.43%.

The state reported 1,843 Maryland residents are hospitalized with COVID-19, the second-highest daily hospital census since the pandemic began. About 1,418 of those patients require acute care beds, and another 425 are receiving more serious care.

In Anne Arundel County, hospitalizations continue rising. The county reported 159 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 on Thursday. Thirty-six needed intensive care.

Data from the Anne Arundel County Department of Health shows the current seven-day average for ICU hospital beds in use is 86.6%. The seven-day average for acute beds in use is about 85.1%. The data reflects hospital occupancy for Anne Arundel Medical Center and the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center, but it is a moving metric, as the hospitals can add or reduce capacity as needed.

Statewide, about 81% of inpatient beds are full, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Patients with or suspected to have COVID-19 occupy about 22% of those beds.

The vaccination effort across the state is underway. More than 15,000 Anne Arundel County residents have received their first shot, and at least 983 county residents have received their second shot, according to the county health department.

As of Thursday, Maryland administered roughly 35% of its doses.
