SoundAsleep Dream Series air mattress review

An air mattress is an affordable way to provide overnight guests with a place to sleep. It can be set up in a matter of minutes and is easily packed away, eliminating the need for a dedicated guest room. Unfortunately, many air mattresses are uncomfortable for several reasons. They don't offer proper support and tend to get cold at night, and some are so low to the ground that it feels like you're sleeping on the floor.

SoundAsleep claims to have solved those problems with their Dream Series air mattress. It has ComfortCoil technology, double-height construction and a flocked top that is said to offer a warm and cozy sleeping experience.

To see whether or not the SoundAsleep Dream Series air mattress truly lives up to its claims and offers a comfortable sleeping experience, we put it to the test. Here's what we found.

How we tested the SoundAsleep air mattress

We tested the Dream Series air mattress by having someone sleep on it for several nights. We had an overnight guest who had stayed with us before, when we had a different brand of air mattress. This way we could accurately compare the comfort and features of SoundAsleep’s Dream Series with that of our old model. After three nights of use, we asked our guest questions about their sleeping experience. We also tried lying on it ourselves for a short period of time to gauge how supportive it felt after it was just inflated, and in the morning after it had been slept on all night.

What is the SoundAsleep air mattress?

The SoundAsleep Dream Series is a high-quality air mattress designed for home use. It comes in several sizes to accommodate one or two sleepers and has a double-height, dual-chamber construction that is designed to make it feel more like a traditional bed than many other air mattresses.

How does the SoundAsleep air mattress work?

The Dream Series air mattress offers convenient operation and utilizes a combination of strong materials and internal air coils to provide a supportive sleeping surface that the company claims can hold air without losing pressure for several days.

After unboxing it, you place the air mattress wherever you plan on having your guest sleep for the night. Then you simply plug it in and the pump will automatically inflate it to the proper pressure. You can then add a bit more air, or remove some, if you prefer to make the mattress firmer or softer. This entire process takes roughly 7-10 minutes.

For optimal comfort, it is recommended to make it up just like a traditional bed. This includes putting a sheet down for the user to sleep on top of, plus pillows and a top sheet or comforter.

When you have finished sleeping on the air mattress, set the pump to deflate and it will automatically suck out the air just as quickly as it inflated. This eliminates the hassle of having to physically press down on the Dream Series mattress to remove the air as you would with pumpless models. After it has fully deflated, fold or roll it back up and place it in the storage bag it comes with or any other storage container you prefer.

SoundAsleep air mattress features

ComfortCoil technology

One of the biggest issues with air mattresses is the lack of support they provide. SoundAsleep combats this by incorporating 40 internal air coils into the mattress. These coils improve the support and ensure the mattress provides the user with a flat sleeping surface throughout the entire night. We found the mattress to be comfortable to sleep on, and it felt just as firm in the morning when we awoke as it did when we bedded down for the night.

SureGrip bottom

Air mattresses have a tendency to slide around during the night, especially under restless sleepers. This is because the PVC material that the mattresses are crafted from tends to be slippery when placed on tile, wood floors and other hard surfaces. The SoundAsleep Dream Series has a SureGrip bottom that mitigates the problem and helps to keep the mattress in place.

Flocked top

The PVC material of an air mattress can also cause sheets to slip off during use. To solve this problem, SoundAsleep gives their Dream Series air mattress a flocked top that provides traction for the sheets. It also creates a softer and warmer sleeping surface. We found that the flocked top served its purpose well, and we didn’t get cold during the night. The mattress felt soft to the touch, which we appreciated.

Double-height construction

A standard air mattress measures between 7-10 inches high. This low height not only makes it feel like you are sleeping on the floor, but can also make it difficult for some people to get into and out of the bed. To better recreate the feeling of sleeping on a traditional bed, the Dream Series air mattress has a double-height construction that measures 19 inches tall. We found this to be a good height for easy entry and exit from the mattress.

Built-in pump

All air mattresses should be inflated with an electric pump. On the Dream Series models, the pump is incorporated directly into the mattress so you never have to worry about losing it. You turn it on at the flip of a switch, and conveniently, it automatically stops when it reaches the proper inflation level. We found the pump to work well, but it took longer to fully inflate the mattress than the four minutes the company claimed.

SoundAsleep air mattress cost

The SoundAsleep Dream Series air mattress starts at $115 for a twin and costs up to $190 for a king. This is notably more expensive than double-height air mattresses from many competitors.

SoundAsleep air mattress pros

The Dream Series air mattress lived up to many of the manufacturer’s claims. It provided a comfortable and supportive sleeping surface for us and held its air the entire night. The double-height construction made it convenient for us to get out of bed in the morning, and the flocked top effectively helped us stay warm and hold the sheet in place.

It was also easy to both inflate and deflate, as well as roll up for packing it into the included storage bag. It also inflated reasonably quickly, though not as fast as the manufacturer claims. A high 500-pound weight capacity makes it suitable for larger users or two sleepers, but despite that, it is lightweight enough for one person to set it up and move it around on their own.

SoundAsleep air mattress cons

Though the Dream Series air mattress held air well over the three days it was used, we found that after several uses, it became less effective at retaining its pressure through the night. This is most likely due to small leaks that have developed over time. Also, despite the claims that the internal air coils keep the mattress flat, it did develop a slight bump in the center.

Is the SoundAsleep air mattress worth it?

The SoundAsleep Dream Series air mattress offers a supportive place to sleep and it kept us both warm and comfortable, which certainly makes it a worthy option for buyers whose sole concern is sleep quality. That said, there are a number of air mattresses from other manufacturers that have similar features, but come at a lower cost. That, combined with the tendency of the Dream Series air mattress to begin leaking after a few uses, means that those looking for the best value may be better off choosing a different model.
