Getting a good night's rest is one of the foundations of a happy, healthy life.

It plays a part in so many aspects of wellness -- not getting enough sleep can adversely affect your metabolism, job performance, and self-esteem. So when I was still struggling to fall asleep despite changing several habits -- like putting my phone away earlier and earlier -- I decided that maybe it was the mattress I was sleeping on.

What I found when I started searching for a suitable mattress: There are suddenly a ton of new names on the market. Gone are the days of going to a store and awkwardly lying down in front of a sales associate -- now, you can have a high-quality mattress shipped directly to your home in a box.

After looking around online, I ultimately landed on the Puffy Lux model because it was marked down significantly and I had heard great things about the emerging brand.

Here's what I found: Without a shred of hyperbole, upgrading to the Puffy Lux has markedly improved my life in several ways.

I'll get into how the mattress is incredibly comfortable -- but let's start from the beginning. When I opened the box, the compressed bed was easy to unwrap (although, a little bit of muscle/help is necessary when you're unrolling it). Also, there was minimal to no smell -- which is sometimes common with beds-in-a-box.

It takes a couple of nights for the mattress to find its most comfortable form. But after the first two sleeps, my partner and I settled in nicely.

It's a soft mattress that uses memory-foam technology to ensure comfortable sleeping conditions no matter how you sleep (whether on your side, back, front, or a combination).

It also doesn't sleep hot. I tend to get overheated at night, but my partner is the opposite -- both of us have been very happy with the Puffy Lux.

The bed is made of four layers and is 12 inches thick. And while there are several scientific breakdowns of what this means in sterile, quantitative terms, here's what I actually know about it in my firsthand experience: I'm sleeping better and I'm waking up more refreshed. Most of that can be attributed to the fact that we don't notice when our dog jumps on and off the bed in the middle of the night anymore.

Finally,

So what are the drawbacks? Well, the price is far from insignificant. The Puffy Lux is relatively pricey for the bed-in-a-box market. I'm happy with my purchase, but I understand that not everyone wants to spend that much on one transaction.

Here are quick reviews of some thriftier models after interviewing users who tested them.

The medium-soft version of the Cocoon by Sealy was too soft for our tester and his partner. They reported waking up with back pains and ultimately had to return the mattress. But if you prefer an extremely soft model, this one is worth considering.

That couple ultimately landed on a Casper and loved it. And at less than $1,000, they're fine with not getting all of the features of a Puffy Lux.

Best add-ons to make your mattress even more comfortable. Getting a good night's rest isn't only about the mattress.

Parachute linen: The most comfortable sheets by my favorite brand. They somehow get cozier as we sleep in them, and they accommodate both of us and our differing sleep temperatures ably.

Casper pillows: Some complain they're a little too soft, but they're perfect for us.

West Elm bed frame: Has a soft headboard, which is great for reading in bed.

Casper weighted blanket: This was the trendiest product of 2019. It helps with anxiety and putting your mind at ease -- which is huge at bedtime.
