Wednesday-Sunday: Charm City Comedy Festival

May 4-8 and 11-16

I usually find myself pretty disappointed by stand-up comedy on TV. It's like most of these performers, with a few important exceptions, choose the least funny subjects to talk about—think "things Donald Trump would find funny" kind of unfunny. However, when I've sat in the audience at local comedy shows, I more often leave smiling or pleasantly grossed out or even LMAO. There are plenty of local acts every week, but there's no better time to experience an onslaught of comedy than at the annual festival hosted by the Charm City Comedy Project. Now in its third and biggest year, spanning two weekends, the festival will bring stand-up, sketch, musical comedy, and improv performers and troupes from Baltimore as well as New York, Philadelphia, DC, Chicago, New Orleans, and elsewhere. Also on the program are workshops for budding comics and a panel on Women in Comedy (and no, it's not like a tokenizing thing; there are lots of women performers on the bill—I checked). Imrov and Sketch Weekend May 4-8, Women in Comedy panel 4 p.m. May 8, Standup Weekend May 11-16; Charm City Comedy Project space upstairs at Zissimos Bar, 1023 W. 36th St., (443) 741-2227, charmcitycomedyproject.com; $10 for individual shows, $20 for day passes, $40 for weekend passes, $80 for all-weekend pass, $40-$50 for workshops.
