Aug. 14

It used to be that post-traumatic stress disorder was only associated with soldiers who had seen war, but over the past several years we've seen a narrative shift. A couple of weeks ago, J. Brian Charles wrote a feature for City Paper about trauma in Baltimore. Violence is a cycle; past trauma, left untreated, can lead the victim to inflicting more violence. Charles quotes the city's health commissioner Leana Wen: "The victims of violence are suffering trauma...We know the perpetrators of violence are experiencing trauma." The 2015 documentary "Wounded Places" looks at how violence and subsequent PTSD impact young people in impoverished areas, who are statistically more likely to experience violence firsthand. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring Derrick Chase of Stand Up Baltimore; Lorenzo Cooper, a social worker in the Department of Juvenile Justice; and Greg Mashburn of Safe Streets Baltimore. 2-5 p.m., Real News Network, 231 N. Holliday St., therealnews.com, free. (Rebekah Kirkman)
