Jay Rock is the secret weapon of Black Hippy, the West Coast rap crew ostensibly fronted by conscious rap superstar Kendrick Lamar. He struts onto tracks by Lamar and other Black Hippy members and briefly steals the song away from them—it's the MC equivalent of a scene-swiping cameo in a movie (think: the rap version of Alec Baldwin's performance in "Glengarry Glen Ross"). Most notably there's his verse on Lamar's 2012 track 'Money Trees'; a verse on 'I Just Wanna Party,' a track by YG that also features fellow Black Hippy ScHoolboy Q; and a slept-on verse on Isaiah Rashad's 'Shot You Down Remix.' In September, Jay Rock released "90059," a solo album that feels like a whole album of punchy guest verses. Also on the bill is Baltimore basement-rap hero Butch Dawson. 8 p.m., Baltimore Soundstage, 124 Market Place, (410) 244-0057, baltimoresoundstage.com, $20-$22. (Brandon Soderberg)
