Saturday: Wikipedia Editathon: African American Artists

For artists, art historians, and art enthusiasts who are not white men, the existing story of Western art is discouraging, to put it lightly. For centuries, people of color and women were prevented by various means from entering the practice and profession of art, and many of those who became artists in spite of such obstacles were overlooked—either during their time or with the recording of history—in favor of their white male counterparts. This problem is obviously damaging to the careers and legacies of countless artists, but it also has left art history, as a whole, a lot less diverse and interesting than it could be. So all over the country, volunteers are gathering to hold mass "editathons" to create and update articles on Wikipedia (for better or worse one of the world's most widely used resources) for women and minority artists. Today you can help update Wikipedia with information on artwork by African-American artists represented in the Baltimore Museum of Art's collection.
