We told you back in June that the Charles Revival Series would be screening "Multiple Maniacs," John Waters' second feature, about a traveling sideshow, led by Lady Divine, that is a front for robbery, kidnapping, and murder (as with just about every Waters film, it is so much more too). Last week, it was announced the legendary local filmmaker would be appearing at one screening to introduce the film and take part in a Q&A.
As industry publication Variety noted in its review, "Multiple Maniacs" is appearing in theaters for the first time thanks to a restoration by the Criterion Collection, leading Waters to quip in a statement, "Finally, 'Multiple Maniacs' looks like a bad John Cassavetes film!" That bit of self-deprecating humor aside, the restored film has been getting positive reviews, with Salon saying that, through the lens of today's culture wars, the movie "feels like a manifesto for a form of radical consciousness that would not exist for decades."
Waters will be appearing at the Sept. 12 screening at 7 p.m. There are two other screenings, Sept. 10 at 11:30 a.m. and Sept. 15 at 9 p.m.
