This has been a banner year for sinkholes and we're always keeping our eyes on the ground for signs of the next showstopper. We've got our eyes on that Centre Street one turning the corner up Cathedral. The signs? Water has been seeping from a seam in the sidewalk for months, just around the corner from the repairs underway since April. That means something's leaking under there, and calls to Baltimore 311 have yielded nothing but a reminder that sidewalks, unlike streets, are the homeowner's responsibility, not the city's. Well, OK. We're sure the apartment building owners in the neighborhood will get right on that. In the meantime, we'll wait for the next sinkhole to open up and ponder, again, the costs of individualizing the collective need for sidewalks.
