Thrift stores are abound with old sports jerseys, jeans, and decades-old clothes with a certain level of kitsch. But for shoppers with more discerning taste, there's the Wise Penny, a thrift store boasting some of the top designer names at prices comparable to Goodwill. On a recent trip, we found his and hers Hermès jackets, along with a vintage Giorgio Armani suit, Hickey Freeman pants, and ties from Brooks Brothers and Christian Dior in the men's section. There were tops from Ralph Lauren and Ann Taylor, a Calvin Klein jacket, and Cole Haan sandals in the women's section. Wise Penny may not have the volume of, say, Value Village but it makes up for it in the quality of the clothes, housewares, and art on sale. Best of all, store proceeds benefit the Junior League.
