When Freddy opened on Franklin Street in 2014, in the space that once housed artist-run gallery sophiajacob, it let in a breath of wind from the north, primarily showing male artists—many from New York. While Freddy provided an anchor for neighboring galleries, it also had an air of secrecy and an impenetrable persona, continuing the myth of invisible male genius in the art world. Freddy closed up and moved out, and Alex Ebstein took over the location and opened the first show at Phoebe Projects this past January. Phoebe's shows play generously with the scale of the narrow room, from the outsized ghostliness of Jordan Kasey's oil paintings to Virginia Poundstone's precariously mounted roses in glass against a wall-sized mirror decal. To date, Phoebe's shows have been formally rigorous, playful with material, and, incidentally, have served as a solid platform for female artists.
