During the uprising following the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody, hundreds of protesters gathered at North and Pennsylvania avenues to express their views and march against police violence. That's a lot of hungry people and Great Granns made sure they got fed. The small soul-food restaurant was cranking out dishes like fried chicken and chicken and waffles, and pouring numerous cups of house-made lemonade and sweet tea until they ran out. Then they started all over again the next day. Regardless of political or social views, media, residents, and national figures in the Black Lives Matter movement were all united in waiting for food at Great Granns. Plenty of its customers left still angry about the police situation, but none of them left hungry.
