As an institution, City Paper strongly supports the holy union of ice cream and booze in Baltimore's restaurants and watering holes. We loved the spiked peaches and cream at Shoo-Fly and hope it survives the restaurant's potential reopening elsewhere, and the Berger shake at Abbey Burger Bistro proudly unites boozy shakes with a Baltimore institution (Berger cookies). But nothing quite compares to the sweet and sour at Nickel Taphouse, which has the best boozy shakes in town for our money. With salted caramel ice cream, bourbon, and savory bacon crumbles, this thing seems to become more flavorful with every blessed sip. For some reason we can't fathom, it's no longer on the menu, but the bartenders will still make it for you if you ask (thank god). Occasionally, the bacon crumbles get stuck in your straw, but we can't imagine a more delicious problem to have.
