Frigid cold may have helped keep the violence in check last week, as the police tallied only three nonfatal shootings (four if you count the guy the police shot on Sunday). But in Baltimore it takes more than single-digit temperatures to halt the killings entirely. One of the nonfatals was a head shot, and there were two gun murders, bringing this year’s tally to 32, four fewer than on this date last year.

11:03 a.m. As the year’s first big snowfall got underway, police found Kevin Mason, a 29-year-old African-American man, slumped behind the wheel of parked car on the 3800 block of Ridgewood Avenue, near the Callaway Elementary School in the Dolefield neighborhood. They later determined he had been shot at least once in the body. Police believe Mason had resided about two miles south on the 3300 block of Elgin Avenue.
