March 27-29
Sometimes you want to watch films to be intellectually challenged, to admire innovative cinematography or effects, to see how a script confronts a societal issue--and sometimes you just want to watch something mindlessly cheery. "Singin' in the Rain" definitely falls into the latter category, and it's one of the best examples of a purely joyful movie--the American Film Institute has named it the greatest movie musical of all time. Even us here at Baltimore's most cynical alternative weekly can't help but giggle at Donald O'Connor's physical-based humor in the musical number 'Make 'Em Laugh,' and Gene Kelly's tap-dancing is always a pleasure. Get the chance to watch Kelly splash through puddles on the big screen when the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs "Singin' in the Rain's" musical score live to accompany the movie. We bet you'll leave with a smile on your face. Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m., Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St., (410) 783-8000,
