The Mount Vernon pizza restaurant-bar combo might have one of the best under-the-radar happy hours out there-not necessarily because of the drink deals, which are great in their own right; we're talking about the rare bar that offers the opportunity to hold a beer in one hand and toss a bocce ball with the other. How do we know it's under the radar? We stopped by on a recent Wednesday, about 7:30 p.m., and they were closing up shop downstairs, where the three walled courts covered with a dark-green carpet are housed, because business was slow. When we went by on Friday, closer to the traditional happy-hour, um, hour, the de facto busiest time for post-work libations, there were a few folks downstairs, but it didn't really pick up until after the specials ($1 Boh draughts [though it was Miller Lite on this particular day], $2 domestic bottles, $3 select craft beers, $4 martinis, $5 5-inch premium pizzas) ended at 7 p.m. This is hardly a complaint, of course, because we got to enjoy unlimited free bocce games with our friends. The courts may not rival the famous expanse in Little Italy, but they are plenty long and the bumps in the carpet, intentional or not, make touch a premium. If bocce is not your game, the upstairs area has two Skee-Ball games ($1 per play) and a pool table, and tucked away in the basement is a Multicade machine doubling as a table. There's a little something for everyone, and the more people realize this, the livelier it will become.
