The man killed
as part of a triple shooting on Feb. 2 in the 3400 block of Reisterstown Road has been identified as Quentin Cannady, a 46-year-old African-American man. Cannady was murdered in his own home.
Monday, Feb. 4
2:05 A.M. Police were called to the 200 block of East Fayette Street next to the Clarence M. Mitchell Jr. Courthouse downtown. Darius Parks, a 22-year-old African-American, was found lying facedown by a bus stop, bleeding from his neck and head. A 30-year-old African-American man and a 26-year-old African-American man were also stabbed during the incident. All three were taken to local hospitals. Parks died; the other two survived.
Tuesday, Feb. 5
2:20 P.M. The next day, a second triple stabbing in downtown left a person dead. Police were called to the McDonald's at the corner of North Howard and West Fayette streets because a male was seen bleeding out front. When they arrived, they found three children stabbed numerous times. A 16-year-old African-American male and a 15-year-old African-American male were taken to an area hospital in stable condition. Deontae Smith, a 15-year-old African-American male, went into cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital and died in surgery. The three teens were at the parade to celebrate the Ravens Super Bowl win when they got into a fight with another group of youths near Harborplace. The fight reignited later, outside the McDonalds, where an African-American male in a white baseball cap, purple hoodie, and tan pants stabbed Smith to death. Smith is the third minor murdered in the first 36 days of this year.
Friday, Feb. 8
3:30 P.M. Police were called to the scene of a house fire in the 5700 block of Highgate Drive near Pimlico Race Course. Inside they found Jennifer Conyers, a 32-year-old African-American woman, restrained in her basement. She was dead. Police were unable to give the cause of her death at press time. Her car had been stolen. Police located the car over the weekend and, with it, Monte Carter, a 38-year-old African-American man. Carter was arrested on Feb. 10 and charged with murder, assault, robbery, theft, false imprisonment, and arson, among other charges, in connection with Conyers' death. Conyers is the fourth female murdered this year.
Ricky Horton, a 26-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Jan. 31 for a triple shooting outside an after-hours club in the 2100 block of West North Avenue that left Sean Rhodes, a 25-year-old African-American man, dead.
Jason Hamel, a 33-year-old Caucasian male, was convicted on Feb. 6 of murdering Keyva Bluitt, a 35-year-old African-American man. Hamel went to the 800 block of Battery Avenue on June 20, 2008, to buy cocaine. He paid $5,000 and received a package that contained a T-shirt instead of the promised drugs. Realizing that he had been cheated, Hamel shot into the car of the dealers. He hit Bluitt in the chest. The other two people in the car pushed Bluitt out onto the street and drove away.
