Baltimore Club king Rod Lee released an installment in his series of club mix albums almost every year starting with 2001's Volume 1: Operation: Start-Up and up to 2008's Volume 7: Club Armageddon. Now, after a long lull and much public demand, he's finally coming back with Volume 8: Rock City this fall.
Perhaps the most enduring Baltimore Club anthem of the last few years is "Bring in the Katz," the uproarious 2010 track that came about when rapper and 92Q personality Porkchop started hollering and ranting on the air while the DJ, club vet K.W. Griff, cut up a frantic track. And it's recently taken on a second life outside of Baltimore, thanks to London producer L-Vis 1990. And later this month, the Mad Decent producer will be flying out to Baltimore for Cullen Stalin's weekly Posh Cavern event at Red Maple, which will host an official release party for "Bring in the Katz (L-Vis 1990 Dub)" on Sept. 23.
Unruly Records will soon begin rolling out a monthly series of digital EPs that revisit some of the label's classic Baltimore Club bangers with new remixes from a wide variety of younger producers. Some of the tracks include King Tutt's "African Chant" and DJ Class' "Tear Da Club Up," and the remixers will range from new-school Club-music beatmakers, like Murder Mark, to producers from dubstep and house scenes far outside Baltimore.
A quick overview of some of the dance music and DJ events in town this week: On Wednesday, DJ Inn hosts Internationalism at Red Maple. On Friday, DJ Biskit is at Club 347, Physical Education with James Nasty and Ponyo is upstairs at the Ottobar, Deep in the Game is at Club Hippo, and Save Your Soul is at the Lithuanian Hall. On Saturday, DJ Who is at Mosaic, Datsik and Delta Heavy headline at Baltimore Soundstage and Dionysus hosts the indie/electro/house dance party F#@K the Rent. On Tuesday, Joe Squared Station North has Dig! with Landis Expandis and Napspace, while DJ Bluebird and Cian Noteman spin old-school hip-hop at Joe Squared Inner Harbor.
