The man shot in the head in the 1000 block of North Central Avenue on June 24 has been identified as Deangelo Bess, a 25-year-old African-American man.

The fifth fatal Baltimore City Police-involved shooting occurred this week. Two officers were on patrol in a police cruiser in the 4600 block of Liberty Heights Avenue when they saw a man punching a woman through the window of a car parked at a gas station. They pulled up to confront the man and he took off running. One officer chased the man, who has been identified as Michael Wudtee, a 38-year-old African-American man. The officer and Wudtee allegedly began fighting in the 3600 block of Gwynn Oak Avenue. Wudtee allegedly assaulted the officer, injuring the officer’s face and lower body. The officer took out his gun and shot Wudtee in the upper torso. Both the officer and Wudtee were taken to local hospitals. The officer’s injuries were not life-threatening. At press time, police had not released the officer’s name. Wudtee died at 1 A.M.

Tuesday, June 26

9:54 p.m. A male was shot in the head and body in the 4600 block of Norfolk Avenue. He died later at an area hospital. At press time, he had not been identified. This is the 14th murder in Northwest Baltimore this year. There were 15 homicides in the Northwestern in all of 2011. After this week, the Northwestern and Southwestern districts are tied as the third most murderous police districts in the city. The Northeastern is the second with 16 murders, and the Eastern, the smallest police district, has the most murders, with 20.

Thursday, June 28

9:42 p.m. Neal Gaines, a 41-year-old African-American man, was found lying on his back in the street in the 2100 block of Denison Street in the Walbrook neighborhood. He had been shot in the head and died at a city hospital at 3:44 A.M. on June 29.


Isaac Truss, a 23-year-old African-American man, pleaded guilty on June 25 to murdering Keith Cooper, a 47-year-old African-American man, and Edward Jones, a 50-year-old African-American man, in two different incidents. Cooper was discovered inside his apartment at 1 W. Conway St. near the Baltimore Convention Center on April 21, 2011. He had been shot in the chest and was dead. The next day, Jones was shot and killed at a bus stop in the 200 block of West Fayette Street, a block from First Mariner Arena. Truss was arrested on April 23, 2011, with the gun used in both murders.

Two men were arrested on June 26 for the murder of Tavon Fredrick, a 35-year-old African-American man. Frederick was shot in the head during a home invasion on May 23. Dontay Dorsey, a 23-year-old African-American man, and Dontre Mitchell, a 23-year-old African-American man, received multiple charges, including murder and burglary.

On June 28, police arrested Shawn Stevenson, a 41-year-old African-American man, for the murder of Somchanh Sipaynoun, a 37-year-old Asian woman. According to The Baltimore Sun, which gives the victim’s name as Sonchanh Sipayboun, Sipaynoun was found in a bathtub on April 23, and it was initially believed she may have committed suicide. The autopsy, however, showed that she had actually been stabbed in the neck, had head trauma, her spine had been fractured, and her collarbone broken. She also appeared to have been sexually assaulted. Stevenson, is the father of Sipaynoun’s children.

Antwan Conley, a 38-year-old African-American man, was arrested on June 29 for the murder of Darshewn Freeman, a 44-year-old African-American man. Freeman was discovered behind the 1200 block of West Ostend Street on March 18, 2011, bleeding from the head. He died the next day.
