Donta Matthews, a 22-year-old African-American man, was convicted on March 12 of murdering Darnell Gray, a 35-year-old African-American man. Gray was in the back seat of an SUV in the 700 block of Bartlett Avenue on Dec. 16, 2009, when two men started shooting at the car. The driver sped up to get away from the gunfire, but Gray was hit in the right armpit and left knee and died. No one else in the car was shot. Matthews’ co-defendant, Thomas Carter, a 20-year-old African-American man, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and carrying a handgun on March 2 and was sentenced to three years in prison. Matthews has not yet been sentenced.
