Food truck specializing in grilled cheese variations hits the streets

After what seems like weeks of speculation

around the office, I finally got my chance to ask the woman taking orders: How do you pronounce “GrrChe”? And, of course, the generator powering Baltimore’s latest food truck all but drowned out what sounded “grr-CHAY,” which she laughingly corrected to “grr-CHEE,” and then mumbled something (possibly a joke) about how she didn’t know how to pronounce it. It probably doesn’t matter, as a half-dozen Baltimoreans waited in line ahead of us for grilled cheese sandwiches on a muggy June afternoon. Maybe the promise of Havarti, roasted tomatoes, and mint raised expectations for the Veggie ($6.25) too high, but it was a letdown—not bad at all, but nothing that elevated it beyond American with a schmear of marinara made at home. Likewise, the Gorgonzola/chicken/pesto Dominique ($7.75) failed to wow; it offered the requisite rich, flavorful gooiness, but the chicken was just chicken and the pesto barely there. More traditional sandwiches came off best. The BCT ($7.50) got a distinct upgrade from sharp, smoky cheddar on top of the bacon and tomato boost—a winner. And while some of the sandwiches (all ordered on thinish sourdough) got a bit soggy in their foil, the straight-up Plain and Simple ($4.50)—ordered with American but available with cheddar, Brie, and other cheeses—kept a bit of its toasted bite and offered all the cheesy goodness you could want. On a cooler day, that and a cup of tomato basil soup ($3.50) would hit the spot.
