Good tribute albums, such as the "The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young," pay respects through creative reinvention. Great tribute albums—see Dave Grohl's "Probot"—cannily camouflage nostalgia with its patina of new. Matmos' Drew Daniel, as Soft Pink Truth, achieves something in a completely different league with "Why Do the Heathen Rage?" This utterly sincere mash note to all things black metal has the audacity to cover the likes of Venom, Hellhammer, and Mayhem, and in the process both critique the genre's inherent xenophobia, misogyny, and irresponsibly puerile violence and also point a way toward a queertastic, dance-floor-ready black metal strain. Brilliant and instantly catchy.
