Murder Ink 12/9/15: 10 murders this week, 321 murders this year

After nearly a week without a killing, Baltimore's murderers restored the pace of homicides, killing three people in separate incidents on Dec. 2 alone. There were 10 nonfatal shootings reported as well during the week. Police arrested a man they say killed Kendall Fenwick at his home on Nov. 9. Police also made several gun arrests, including the seizure of a machine gun.

Tuesday, Dec. 1


3:26 p.m. Gregory Mungo, a 32-year-old African-American man, was inside a vehicle on the 1200 block of North Caroline Street in the Oliver neighborhood, around the corner from his residence on Biddle Street, when someone shot him. Police and medics responded to the shooting and got Mungo to Johns Hopkins hospital, where he died. He was the third man killed in the Oliver neighborhood since mid-November. He was the seventh this year.

Wednesday, Dec. 2

1:35 a.m. Devon Herring, a 28-year-old African-American man, was in the alley off the 1300 block of North Longwood Street, in the Rosemont neighborhood, when someone shot him in the upper body. He died soon after at a hospital. He was shot about two blocks from his residence on the 1500 block of Poplar Grove Street. Herring was the second person killed in Rosemont in the past month. He was the fourth since April.

10:48 a.m. Brandon Ripple, a 33-year-old Caucasian man, was shot on the 1900 block of Walbrook Avenue, in the Mondawmin neighborhood. He died soon after at Shock Trauma.

9:05 p.m. Harold Edwards, a 40-year-old African-American man, was on the 2800 block of Lauretta Avenue in the Rosemont Homeowners/Tenants neighborhood when someone shot him in the chest. He was a couple hundred feet from his residence. Medics got Edwards to a hospital, but he died.

Thursday, Dec. 3

1:59 a.m. Police called to a vacant house on the 900 block of Dantrey Court in Brooklyn found Daquan Johnson, an 18-year-old African-American man, shot multiple times in the body and head. He was dead. Police gave Johnson's last address as about three-quarters of a mile away, on the 3600 block of Everett Street. Johnson was the sixth person killed in the Brooklyn neighborhood in 2015.

Friday, Dec. 4

4:38 p.m. Troy Marshall, a 21-year-old African-American man was shot to death on the 2000 block of Kennedy Avenue, in the East Baltimore Midway neighborhood. The neighborhood comprises 0.3 square miles and has a population of about 4,200 people. This was the sixth murder in that neighborhood this year.

5:50 p.m. A 40-year-old man who police have identified as Jabrai Ali, Sr., was shot at least once in the back while on the 5600 block of the Alameda, where the Glen Oaks neighborhood borders Woodbourne Heights. Police found him there, dead.

Saturday, Dec. 5

3:20 a.m. A man whose name and age police have not yet provided was on the 2200 block of Druid Hill Avenue in Druid Heights when someone stabbed him. He died before police and medics could help him. His was the third murder this year in Druid Heights, a neighborhood of about 57 acres with a population of 1,300.

Sunday, Dec. 6

2:50 a.m. A man who police have not yet publicly identified was on the 2600 block of Boone Street, an alley behind the 2600 block of Greenmount in Harwood, when someone shot him multiple times. Medics got him to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he was pronounced dead.


5:25 p.m. A 27-year-old woman who police have identified as Miriah Barnes on the 400 block of Manse Court in Upton when someone shot her multiple times. She died soon after at a hospital. Police say a possible suspect is an African-American man, about 5-foot-9, who was wearing a gray sweatshirt.

Update: Police announced at a press conference Dec. 4 that they had charged Devante Brim, a 21-year-old African-American man, with the Nov. 9 murder of Kendal Fenwick. Brim was in jail on another shooting and attempted-murder charge. Brim was on probation for a drug conviction and had been charged previously with robbery, assault, and possession of a firearm by a minor.
