Murder Ink

While violence elsewhere captures national attention, Baltimore City's violence continues at record levels. Aside from the murders, there were also 18 non-fatal shootings this week, including a triple-shooting on Sunday.

Tuesday, Aug. 8


1:21 a.m. Tyrese Davis, a 15-year-old African-American boy, was on the 1600 block of W. Franklin Street, walking home with his brother, when someone shot him in the head. Police believe it was a robbery. Davis lived on the 2100 block of W. Fayette Street.

10:02 p.m. Deric Ford Sr., a 54-year-old African-American man, was getting ready to close up the Dollar General store he managed on the 4500 block of Edmondson Avenue when someone shot him. A citizen flagged down police and said the store had been robbed. Medics took Davis to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Ford had lived on the 3600 block of Edmondson Avenue. He was a church deacon. On Saturday police announced the arrest of Michael Thompson, a 27-year-old African-American man. He is charged with killing Ford. Police Commissioner Kevin Davis also said Thompson killed Michael Scott on April 24 "because he felt disrespected."

Thursday, Aug. 10

7:56 a.m. George Madariaga, a 69-year-old man, was on the 5100 block of Linden Heights Avenue in the Langston Hughes neighborhood when someone shot him in the upper body. Madariaga lived on the 100 block of Camp Springs Court. He worked on cars for a living.

Friday, Aug. 11

12:57 a.m. A man who police have not further identified publicly was shot multiple times on the 4100 block of Chesterfield Avenue. Police found him there, and medics took him to a hospital, where he died.

5:26 a.m. Four and a half miles away and four and a half hours later, a 23-year-old man, who police have not yet identified publicly, was riding his bicycle on the 5000 block of York Road when someone shot him in the chest. He died later at a hospital.

10:02 p.m. Two men were on the unit block of N. Abington Avenue in the Carroll-South Hilton neighborhood when someone shot them both. A 35-year-old man was hit in the arm and belly, a 29-year-old man was hit in the torso. Police responded to the shooting but by then the men had made it to a hospital, where the 29-year-old died. Police have not yet released his name.

Saturday, Aug. 12

4:49 p.m. A man who appeared to be in his 20s and who police have not yet identified publicly was on the 1500 block of Holbrook Street when someone shot him. Police were called to a traffic accident and found the man in a vehicle. He died soon after at a hospital.


On Sunday, police arrested the city's latest "Public Enemy Number 1," Darius Neal, an 18-year-old African-American man. He is charged with the June 12 murder of Charmaine Wilson, a 37-year-old African-American woman.
