Murder Ink: 7 murders this week, 199 murders this year

Seven murders a week is a 364-per-year pace.

A woman shot on the 2400 block of East Eager Street on July 12 did not die, as City Paper reported. She survived. A police spokesperson apparently misread a document and told the newspaper that the second victim in a double shooting had also died, when actually only one victim had. The newspaper's database of murders has been updated to reflect the change. We regret the error.

Thursday, Aug. 6

4:27 a.m. Tranell Dansbury, an African-American man a week shy of his 33rd birthday, and La Tonya Denise Battle, who had just turned 31 the day before, were near the intersection of Eden Street and East Monument Street. Someone shot them both. Police found Dansbury on the 700 block of North Eden Street with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. He made it to a hospital but died soon after. Police found Battle on the 1200 block of East Monument Street. She was dead from a head shot.

11:40 p.m. Nineteen hours later and six miles away, in Central Park Heights, Robert Mullins, a 53-year-old African-American man, was on the 4900 block of Palmer Avenue—where he resided—when someone shot him multiple times. He died soon after at a hospital.

Friday, Aug. 7

Sunday, Aug. 9

10:38 a.m. Steven Frank Krug, a 45-year-old Caucasian man, was shot to death on the 4700 block of Gwynn Oak Avenue, in the Howard Park neighborhood. He was taken to a hospital but he died there. Police are looking for witnesses.

4:56 p.m. Jerome Smith, a 36-year-old African-American man, was shot multiple times on the 1000 block of North Patterson Park Avenue, in the Middle East neighborhood. He was dead when police arrived.

8:30 p.m. Police called for a shooting at the 4700 block of Navarro Avenue found a man who had been shot at least once. The man, whose name police have not yet released publicly, died at a hospital soon afterward. The murder occurred three-quarters of a mile from the one that occurred that morning.

Police announced arrests in two murders last week. Shawn Oliver, 44, was charged with the July 16 murder of Mia Henderson, a transgender woman. According to charging documents, police forensics experts matched Oliver's DNA to material found under Henderson's fingernails. Also arrested was Jamel Martin, 18, who was charged in the February 2014 murder of Gregory Ware on the 2900 block of East Eager Street. Police say Ware called Martin and then went to meet him and got shot. They traced what they say is a .45-caliber pistol used in the murder to Martin, saying he had received the gun just eight days before the murder.
