Murder Ink: 8 murders this week; 124 murders this year

Eight people were murdered this week in Baltimore by gunfire. One victim was 13 years old. The police reported eight people were shot non-fatally just over the weekend. This did not make national news because the definition of news is, roughly, "what is important and unusual," and these numbers are routine.

Wednesday, June 8


6:56 p.m. Tiffany Lowery, an African-American woman just two weeks shy of her 31st birthday, was on the 1300 block of James Street in Pigtown when someone shot her. Police found her in the street; medics got her to Shock Trauma. She died. Lowery had resided on the 1400 block of Carol Street.

9:39 p.m. Darrian Johnson, a 19-year-old African-American man, was on the 4300 block of Fernhill Avenue in West Arlington when someone shot him more than once. Police found him there. He died soon after. Johnson's brother Darrius was shot to death last July on the 5100 block of Park Heights Avenue. That murder remains unsolved.

Thursday, June 9

4:36 p.m. Ronald Jones, a 26-year-old African-American man, was on the 1900 block of Edmondson Avenue when someone shot him. Homicide detectives were called because of the severity of his injuries, and Jones died in a hospital shortly after he was shot. Jones lived four blocks away, on the 1500 block of Edmondson Avenue.

11:30 p.m. Jerome McDougald, a 24-year-old African-American man, was walking 100 block of N. Smallwood Street when someone walked up, pulled a gun and shot him. He died soon after at a hospital. He is the second person murdered in the Penrose/Fayette Street Outreach neighborhood in 2016. There were eight killed there last year.

Friday, June 10

7:38 p.m. Reginald Peay, Jr., a 40-year-old African-American man, was shot on the 2500 block of Keyworth Avenue in Greenspring, and died shortly thereafter at Sinai Hospital. Peay had resided on the 1200 block of Sherwood Avenue.

11:40 p.m. Garrison Derricks, a 22-year-old African-American man, was on the 400 block of E. 22nd Street in Barclay when he was shot. Police responded and medics got him to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died. He had resided on the 500 block of E. 35th Street.

Saturday, June 11

1:33 a.m. Deandre Barnes, a 13-year-old African-American boy, was on the 900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue with a 21-year-old man when both were shot. Barnes died soon after at a hospital. The man is expected to live.

3:41 p.m. Xavier Starke, a 38-year-old African-American man, was on the unit block of Shipley Street in Shipley Hill when someone shot him. Police found him there and an ambulance took him to Bon Secours Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
