Palos Heights police investigate armed robbery

Special to the Tribune

Palos Heights police are investigating an armed robbery at the Radio Shack at 119th and Harlem shortly after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
A man pulled a gun on an employee before he fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, Palos Heights Detective Dave Delany said.

A second employee who was in the back room at the time ran out a service door and was later located in the 12100 block of South 70th Avenue, Delany said. No one was injured during the robbery.

The suspect is believed to be the same man who entered a second Radio Shack store in Oak Lawn at 95th Street and Cicero Avenue at around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oak Lawn Division Chief Mike Kaufmann said.

An employee at that store called police after he recognized the suspect from a police description given out following the robbery of several other Radio Shacks in the suburbs.

Kaufmann said police officers were informed during roll call about the Palos Heights robbery and were on alert when they received the call from the Oak Lawn store. Police arrived and the suspect fled on foot into a residential area behind the store.

The suspect, described as a male black in his 30’s, led police on a foot pursuit until he entered the basement stairwell of a home in the 4800 block of 95th Street, Kaufmann said. When the gunman was found by police he put the gun in his mouth prompting a one-hour standoff with police and S.W.A.T. team members.

Police were able to talk the suspect into surrendering without injuring himself, Kaufmann said. Schools in the area were put on lock-down during the standoff.
