Cops: Man questioned in Palatine stabbing death acted in self-defense

A 29-year-old man who stabbed to death another man earlier this week acted in self defense and was released today without criminal charges, Palatine police said.

Eduardo Guillen Tellez, 22, of Palatine, died of injuries suffered when he was stabbed at least twice during a fight Monday outside the Ports O' Call apartment complex, Palatine Police Cmdr. Kurt Schroeder said. The man was taken into custody as a suspect soon after the stabbing, police said.

Witnesses told police Tellez was the aggressor during a fight that erupted when he learned the 29-year-old man sold a television that didn't work to an acquaintance for $40, Schroeder said.

The victim was severely beaten by Tellez and two other men, one of whom had purchased the broken TV. Tellez kicked him in the head during the beating, police said.
