A CTA bus driver was attacked early this morning in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side and a 22-year-old man has been charged, police said.

It was about 1:45 a.m. when the man began causing a disturbance aboard a CTA bus in the 7700 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

Julian Coats, 22, of the 800 block of East 80th Street, was charged with felony aggravated battery to a transit employee, Mirabelli said.

When the 49-year-old driver asked him to get off the bus, the man spit in the driver's face, Mirabelli said. The driver escorted him off the bus, but the 22-year-old punched the driver in the face multiple times. When police got to the scene, the two were on a sidewalk and the victim had cuts to his forehead.

The driver was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center where his condition has stabilized, Mirabelli said.

The 22-year-old, who lives in the area where the attack occurred, was taken into custody soon after officers arrived, Mirabelli said.
