Swimming: Broadneck boys, Severna Park girls win county titles

Broadneck's Noah Yanchulis and Severna Park's Katie Parker each took a year off from competitive swimming for their respective schools. Their returns proved crucial to their teams' success as Yanchulis and Broadneck's boys cruised to victory over Severna Park, 160-98, while Parker helped the Falcons edge the Bruins for the girls title, 128-126, at the Anne Arundel County swimming championships on Friday night in Annapolis.

Broadneck's boys took control of the meet from the opening gun with Vadim Jacobson's opening leg in the 200-yard medley relay.

"We wanted to get our team pumped up and get everyone into it," Jacobson said.

Jacobson's opening leg and Yanchulis' closing legs helped the Bruins to record-setting performances in the 200 medley relay as well as the 400 freestyle relay. They broke the 200 medley relay time by just under three seconds and the 400 freestyle relay time by nearly four seconds.

"We are very excited to have this senior group," Broadneck coach Colleen Parr-Winans said. "They are very mature, they know how to race and they put their all into it and they have a plan. We are really trying to knock off some records and score as many points as we can and have a great season. It's really been a nice way to finish out our senior season."

Jacobson came back after the relay and won the 200 freestyle.

Yanchulis was even more impressive, setting back-to-back records in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

David Thornton, part of both winning relays, took the 200 IM and 100 breast titles, while William Dougherty was part of the winning 400 freestyle relay while defending his 500 freestyle title.

Severna Park's boys weren't going to let Broadneck have all the record-setting fun as Sam Fuller set a record in the 100 backstroke and helped the Falcons 200 free relay team set another record.

"We have put a lot of work into it as a team and it's really starting to pay off," Fuller said. "It's definitely going to push us forward at regions and we are definitely going do better there."

Bennett Bean, who swam anchor on the 200 free relay team for the Falcons, also won the 100 free.

On the girls' side, Parker won the 100 breast stroke in record time. She was also part of the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams and came from behind to win the 200 IM title by three seconds over Annapolis' Taylor Gill.

"The breast stroke leg is definitely my best in the medley and it's my best individually, too," Parker said. "It's nice to have that be the third leg in the IM. That way if I am down in the first half, I know my breast stroke is really strong and my free stroke is pretty decent."

Parker's performance, combined with Lauren Belloff's win in the 100 butterfly and great supporting depth from Katie Harmon, Robin Bachkosky, Kiera Murphy and Maggie Byrne helped the Falcons score the critical points needed to edge Broadneck for the girls' team title.

"We put the kids into a position where they can step up and perform and they did that. I'm just very proud of the effort they put forth,'" Severna Park coach Mike McTammany said. "We had holes to fill but it was a real team effort. We had some star power but we had enough depth to fill the events with competent kids. You aren't going to win all the events but you have to score points in them to win. It's really exciting and we will see what happens next week at regions."

Just like last year, the Doughertys swept the 500. Erin Dougherty won the girls title. She also defended her title in the 200 freestyle.

"It's a twin thing, definitely," she said. "Individual success is really awesome and really important to me but I swim for my team. They are the most important things to me. The ultimate goal is to win as a team and it's the best thing to do. We are all just trying to have fun and swimming for our teammates who couldn't swim tonight."

Megan Dickey also won the 50 freestyle for the Bruins.
