Akira Kyles, a community news journalist for the Carroll County Times, was born and raised in Prince George’s County. She graduated from Oxon Hill High School in 2014, where she served as managing editor and editor in chief of the school newspaper, The Searchlight. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in multimedia journalism from Morgan State University in 2018, where she also served as managing editor and editor in chief of the school newspaper, The MSU Spokesman. She interned and freelanced at the Afro-American Newspaper, and interned the Baltimore City Paper. After graduation she attended the POLITICO Journalism Institute and continued her freelance work for the Afro. She is a proud member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Baltimore Association of Black Journalists.
