Nostalgic memories of the 1970s and ‘80s rushed back for hundreds of guests as the Chicken Barbecue returned to the picnic grounds of Saint Joseph Catholic Community on Aug. 11.
Father Neville O’Donohue, pastor, prayed a blessing on those gathered. “As we continue to remember our past, celebrate the graces we are being given today, and dream of a faith future that is deeper and stronger, I want to remember those who have been so generous to our parish community,” he said.
The Knights of Columbus once again manned the fire pits grilling chicken for more than 500 guests. Under a huge white tent parishioners and friends enjoyed chicken along with potato salad, corn on the cob, baked beans and watermelon and Norwood’s ice cream. One thousand cupcakes were donated by members of Sheen’s Colleens.
Festivities for young and old included hula hoops, corn hole, door prizes, raffles, and a cake auction all while dining at yesterday prices. Danny Gallagher was MC for the day inviting attendees to share memories of past Chicken Barbecues for playback on WSJF 92.7 Catholic Radio. The Carroll County Cloggers, the longest continuously active clogging group In Maryland, provided entertainment.
All this was a part of Saint Joseph’s yearlong Jubilee Celebration. Upcoming events include an Evangelistic Mission with Father Cedric Pisegna on Sept. 17-19 and Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 20-21. For information visit www.saintjosephcatholiccommunity.cc.
