Central Carroll: Africa’s Legacy Global Dinner set for Nov. 15

Learn about another culture, sample delicious cuisine and explore this continent across the sea at Africa’s Legacy Global Dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, inside Decker Center Forum at McDaniel College.

Alex Robb, treasurer of the 45-member Africa Legacy student organization, said this is their ninth annual dinner.

“The dinner came [about] because — as a cultural organization on campus — we wanted a way to share the culture with students who may not be familiar with the beauty of it,” Robb said. “There's no better way to do that then by providing a night of food and entertainment.”

The dinner is open to all, with dancing by the group’s Legacy Dancers, reading of a poem and performances by the choral group Voices of Praise, and professional African drummers. There’s also a skit and a fashion show of traditional African wear. Robb spoke of the food attendees may sample.

“At the dinner there will be fried plantains, salad, fried rice, beignets, braised chicken, and jollof rice, which is traditionally a West African dish consisting of a jasmine rice and mixed vegetables like peas, celery, carrots, and onions with spices like curry powder, ginger, paprika, and garlic. Additionally, desserts will be served like pound cake, cookies, Rice Krispie treats, and others.”

“There is a quote held closely to us by Kwame Nkrumah — ‘I am not African because I was born in Africa, but because Africa was born in me.’ Trying out African culture and cuisine is one of the best ways to learn of the beauty of a continent otherwise overlooked and marred by history,” Robb said.

McDaniel College is located at 2 College Hill in Westminster.

WMS Craft Show and Raffle

Here’s an opportunity to shop for holiday gifts! West Middle School will host a Fall Vendor and Craft Show on Friday, Nov. 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. inside the school at 60 Monroe Street, Westminster.

Look for homemade crafts, direct vendor sales, and a bake sale hosted by the school’s student government association.

“We’re doing a lot of homemade crafts, country clutter style,” said Jennifer Nallo, PTO mom and committee member. “We’ve invited a lot of vendors. I’ve seen some beautiful wooden wreaths made from old windows without glass, and handmade pumpkins crafted from fabric. We have three vendors with handmade jewelry plus several [direct sales consultants with jewelry]. There are art vendors, sign makers … and the list continues to grow. We even have a jerky vendor!”

Look for a raffle, too.

“Every vendor is donating an item to be raffled off,” said Nallo. “And we also have donations from as far as Columbia and Gettysburg, including a week at ABC Care camp and tickets to Toby’s Dinner theatre. Black and Decker donated a tool bag. Stampin’ Up donated a craft basket, and there’s more. You can put tickets into the bags of the items you want to win.”

Tickets for the raffle cost $2 each, 3 for $5, or 6 for $10. The raffle will continue at the Green Turtle Restaurant, from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 12. If you bring a coupon from the school website or reference West Middle School that evening, Green Turtle will donate 20 percent of your purchase to the school. Nallo said the raffle closes at 9 p.m. that night, followed by the drawing.

Funds from the bake sale go to the student government association but proceeds of the show and raffle will help the school purchase a new technology cart.

“I’m trying to raise community awareness in our schools and to bring people together to support the schools,” Nallo said. “Any help you can give us will trickle down to the elementary schools and further on.”

Fundraising dinner for The Sober Truth

A Southwestern style barbecue dinner is always good, but when it is for an amazing cause, it is even better. The Sober Truth will hold their third annual fundraising dinner on Saturday, Nov. 10, at John Street Quarters, beginning at 6 p.m.

The Sober Truth’s executive director, Joyce Mahoney is a retired CPS worker who said she took early retirement to open a treatment center in Taneytown because she knew that this was an underserved area of the county.

“So many people need transportation and assistance,” she said of the Taneytown area. “This dinner is our biggest fundraiser and it will help us pay for transportation. People who need help with drug and alcohol abuse — everything is located in Westminster. When they have mandated treatment and don’t have a ride they miss the treatment. We are purchasing a van to help them get there.

“We also get a lot of our materials from the Betty Ford Center and Hazelton. This is researched, peer reviewed, reliable and credible information, but it is very expensive. This will help with that, too.”

Mahoney said the dinner is a family event.

“We’ll have activities for the kids, like face painting and crafts and we’ll have games for adults, music all evening with a dee jay, and lots of door prizes,” she said.

Tickets to the dinner cost $35 each, but children under age 5 attend free.

“The menu is pulled park, barbecued chicken, western fries, pork and beans, salads, meatless Italian style spaghetti, apple crisp with ice cream on the side, gluten free cookies, iced tea, soda coffee, and water,” Mahoney said. “Our goal is to lead people struggling with addiction on their road to recovery. We address the mind, body and spirit.”

Mahoney encouraged folks to attend.

“If you have experienced addiction or have a family member who has, please come out and support us,” she said. “Addiction covers all areas of the socio-economic scale. No one is spared. We really need the help, and you will be helping others.”

Silver Run-Union Mills History at Friendship Night

Learn about the history of Silver Run and Union Mills at the Silver Run–Union Mills Lions Club’s annual Friendship Night at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at St. Mary’s United Church of Christ in Silver Run.

Cathy Baty, curator of collections at the Historical Society of Carroll County will share little known details about these two historic towns.

“Our Silver Run-Union Mills Lions Club is a community organization,” said Lions Club Publicity chairperson Terrie Bath. “Our open house is an invitation for you to come and enjoy a historical talk about Silver Run and Union Mills, and also to see how we support the community.”

Donations of gently used coats for the Shepherds Staff Call for Coats, pet supplies for the Humane Society and nonperishable food items for the Silver Run food pantry are welcome.

Lions Club Friendship nights are held to encourage the community to learn more about Lions Clubs and the services they provide to the community. There’s no charge for those who attend. Refreshments will be available throughout the evening.
