A Northwest Middle School student won a contest to develop a logo for the Maryland State Department of Education’s Mathematics Department.

Leilani Wiswakarma, an eighth-grader at the school, won the contest, according to a news release from Carroll County Public Schools. As MSDE was updating its website last spring, each office was asked to create their own logos. The Mathematics Department asked students across Maryland to submit logo creations that would signify mathematics in Maryland, according to the release.

This fall, three logos were published in the MSDE Mathematics Fall Newsletter and teachers were asked to vote on which logo they liked best. The logo created by Leilani received 75 percent of the votes, according to the release.

The logo will be used on the MSDE Mathematics website, as well as other MSDE Mathematics publications, according to the release. It will also be on display in the lobby at the Maryland State Department of Education.
