No. 3: Northwestern Mutual Financial Network - Maryland

Northwestern Mutual-Maryland has provided its clients with comprehensive financial planning since 1885. In addition to retirement planning, it specializes in planning for disability income, long-term care, estate, and employee and executive benefits. The local affiliate network is part of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance and Financial Services, which garners more accolades every year, including being named among the world's most admired life insurance companies by a 2013 Fortune magazine survey. Guided by the core value of "service to others," the Maryland employees say their ability to have a positive impact on their clients' lives makes their jobs meaningful. "I get to work with a company and a group of people who are striving to enrich the lives of those we serve," says one. Based in downtown Baltimore, Northwestern Mutual-Maryland is deeply involved in the Living Classrooms Foundation; managing partner Scott Iodice -- he succeeded his father, who held the job for 19 years -- is on the board, and many financial representatives serve as mentors to at-risk young people in the Fresh Start program. Iodice and the other members of the management team get the employees' vote of confidence: "They treat their employees with fairness and respect," says one employee.
