Can manufacturer gets $535,000 in Md. help to expand

An expanding Harford County can manufacturer will receive $535,000 from the state — a loan that will convert to a grant if job-growth conditions are met — to upgrade its plant, state officials said Friday.

The Independent Can Co. in Belcamp plans to add 25 jobs to its 221-employee workforce by the end of 2018. Gov. Martin O'Malley said in an announcement that upgrades and new equipment for the company's headquarters and plant would make the jobs expansion possible.

The assistance, called a conditional loan, comes from the state Department of Business and Economic Development's Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund.

The Independent Can Co. makes specialty tin cans — often the decorative kind that hold candies and popcorn — as well as metal lithography in its 370,000-square-foot facility. It was founded in Baltimore in 1929.
