Rocky Gap casino to add more parking

The Rocky Gap Casino Resort said Tuesday it will add 150 new parking spaces, less than a year after its 550 slot machines and 10 table games started operations.

The Rocky Gap casino, which is supposed to boost tourism in the western part of the state, is the state's fourth and smallest casino. It opened in May and in January announced a new location of the Bonkerz Comedy Club.

Construction, including the expansion of the facility's fitness center, Pro Shop, and a restaurant kitchen, will start this spring, the resort said in a release. The casino will have 750 parking spaces total when the lot is complete. (In comparison, the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore parking garage has room for 4,000 cars.)

The expansion of the casino, which is located in the Rocky Gap State Park, complies with the lease from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the resort said.

The casino, which brought in about $3 million in revenue in January, is owned by Evitts Resort, a subsidiary of Minnesota-based Lakes Entertainment, which acquired Rocky Gap from the Maryland Economic Development Corp in 2012.

Financing for the $54 million facility, which first opened in 1998, included bonds and $16 million in taxpayer funds. The resort includes a 215-room hotel, conference center and Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course.
