About 380 Verizon Wireless employees will lose their jobs at a Hanover call center as part of a national restructuring in which five centers will close and 3,000 workers will need to transfer to new offices or apply for new company jobs, the carrier told workers Wednesday.
The Hanover center will not close, but will become a call center for government agency and business customers as opposed to individual consumers. It will be staffed by 320 workers who will move there from a Verizon call center in Laurel, which will remain open for other functions, said Paul Macchia, a Verizon Wireless spokesman. He said the companywide consolidation was designed to make better use of extra space in company-owned buildings and call centers.
The current Hanover workers will lose their jobs and be eligible for severance packages, but can choose to stay with the company and transfer out of state, he said. Workers also could apply for the jobs that are moving to Hanover. Macchia did not have information on the number of expected openings there.
About 3,000 employees across the company are in similar a situation at centers in Pennsylvania, California and Connecticut. Another 2,200 employees across the 73,000-person company are being moved to nearby offices, including the 320 in Laurel, Macchia said. The realignment is expected to be completed by early May.
