Furniture store brings back Super Bowl promotion that cost $600,000 last year

After giving away about $600,000 in furniture last year, a Baltimore company is testing its luck once again on Super Bowl Sunday.

Last year, Gardiners Furniture promised customers free goods if one of the teams returned a kick for a touchdown at the start of the game or just after halftime. They found themselves having to make good on the promotion after Baltimore Raven Jacoby Jones did just that in the second half.

Gardiners had taken out a $12,000 insurance policy in case of the unlikely event, but the promotion was a welcomed windfall for dozens of Baltimore-area customers.

Because such kick returns are rare, Gardiners isn't doing away with the popular promotion as the Seattle Seahawks face off against the Denver Broncos Sunday. Plus, Gardiners has narrowed the rules a bit this year. The 2014 giveaway only happens if the kick-return touchdown goes down at the start of the game.

The promotion — now in its third year — applies to all furniture purchased before 3 p.m. on Sunday. So customers shouldn't head to Gardiners if the kick is repeated as the Super Bowl gets under way after 6:30 p.m.
